Dear comrades,
Today is November, 12th 2009. By way of reference to my date of birth, I can realize I have turned "thirty!"
As a health activist that was born and raised up in Nairobi slum,I can precisely say I have nothing much to celebrate about today.
Early this morning, myself and other villagers of Kanuku and Kinyago slums at Nairobi woke up into a mourning morning to mourn deaths of three comrades who succumbed to cholera, a disease of poverty.
The said villages and of course other parts of Nairobi have been hit by water scarcity in the recent past. Despite having noted that there was possibility of this communicable disease breakout, the authority has been reluctant such that lives have been lost.
As a result, masses moved into the streets, barricaded public roads and paralyzed traffic snarl up until our many voices were heard and water plus Medicare provided. Protest photo attached. In the past two months, over ninety people have died from cholera in various parts of Kenya and the authority seems to be fighting a loosing battle against communicable diseases.
During the 7th Global Health Promotion Conference at Nairobi, the Nairobi Call to Action called on all stake holders to Take initiative and help promote health globally. I am glad President Obama seems to be winning his war for health care in the USA.
The struggle continues till we bid bye all these diseases of poverty.
In solidarity.
