People's Health Assembly 3 to be held in Cape Town, July 2012

The 3rd People’s Health Assembly (PHA3) to be held in Cape Town in July 2012.

Over the past several years, PHM Circles across the globe have made great strides toward the goal of “Health for All Now,” and PHA3 is an opportunity to take stock of all aspects of the movement. It will be an opportunity to analyze the current global health situation, celebrate strengths and accomplishments of PHM, and to strengthen the global network.

It is now time to start preparing for PHA3! 2011 will be used for mobilization within countries and regions, in a lead up to and in preparation for the 3rd PHA. We encourage all PHM friends to use existing events in 2011 for this mobilization; and for building PHM.

Please keep us informed of any regional events taking place that you think could be used for mobilization towards the Assembly. Activities can include:
reviewing and / or translating the People’s Charter for Health (if not already translated; we have it in over 40 languages already; see www.phmovement.org);
preparing discussion papers;
developing action plans and campaigns towards a shared agenda for people’s health ;
plan actions around a Right to Health campaign using the events to develop testimonies, case studies and discussion papers.

The PHM Global Secretariat welcomes your participation in the planning and implementation of this event. As with the previous 2 assemblies, PHA3 promises to be an exciting opportunity to share ideas and network with health rights activists from around the globe.

Creating an Africa-wide People's Health Movement

Our manifesto As the IPHU participants from the 'Africa Group’ we have agreed that in order to strengthen the movement, we would each need to first start by working locally, strengthening the PHM activities in our respective countries, Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe. We commit to support each other in developing and strengthening the PHM in each of our countries as we work towards an Africa-wide People’s Health Movement. The role of PHM is to bring together organisations and individuals already working for the Right to Health under the banner of this shared vision of “Health for all, now!” PHM Africa is an organisation, not a movement. Anyone who endorses the charter and is working in the struggle for the right to health for all can join PHM Africa. The objectives and activities of our campaign are defined and developed by our members. We will strive to further the movement starting on this blog by connecting with others, sharing experiences,...

PHM-SA Right to health training, Philipi.

Background The training was organised as part of the Right to Health Campaign being led by the People’s Health Movement (PHM) in South Africa . The Campaign was launched in September 2007 and has three components – Capacity building, media and testimonies. The training is conceived as part of capacity building and raising awareness in communities about the right to health and what that entails. It complements the other components of the campaign, by, for example, empowering the participants to go out and train others, and allow community groups to participate in a process of gathering of stories related to the right to health. The training held at Bonne Esperance was the first of the PHM’s workshops in the campaign so was a learning experience for all. In all, there were 22 participants from 4 organisations (Mamelani, Stukkende Plaas action group, Proudly Manenberg and Bonne Esperance), as well as 7 facilitators from PHM. Programme The programme ran from 9am to 3.30pm . ...

Access to safe abortion remains a dream for many women in Uganda-Universal Health Coverage Must Include Access to Medical Abortion!

As we mark the International Universal Health Coverage day, December 12 , under the theme “Keep the Promise”, it is crucial to highlight the World Health Organization (WHO)’s policy incoherence regarding misoprostol and mifepristone. Is the WHO keeping the promise of delivering universal health for all? WHO’s policy incoherence regarding the status of misoprostol and mifepristone constitutes a significant barrier to wider access to safe medical abortion. WHO must keep the promise of UHC and unequivocally endorse prompt low cost access to misoprostol and mifepristone including appropriate advice on usage and precautions. This comment addresses the global issue taking Uganda as a case study.   Access to essential health care is the ‘promise’ of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). It is also a fundamental human right. The mortality burden globally associated with unsafe abortion is horrendous and could be dramatically reduced if prompt low cost access to safe medical abortion ...
